Pets

Photos of our pets over the years. Mostly older pictures of previous pets.

Phineas

Born: Apr 26, 2009
Phineas is an shaded English cream longhaired dachshund, and is the second boy in our household. We've picked him out from a breeder in Wilmington, NC, and we brought him home with us on July 12, 2009. His name is from the Disney TV cartoon Phineas and Ferb.

Logan Picklepants

Born: May 20, 2022
Logan is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. He's a long-haired dog with tri-color markings. He came home with us on Aug 19, 2022.

Daisy

Born: Jun 18, 2008, Died: Jan 2, 2023
Daisy was adopted from the Red Dog Farm Rescue in Greensboro where she was called Jade. She came to our house as a 10-week-old kitten, full of cuddles but also very easily spooked. She doesn't like Penny who always tries to chase her, so she hides near the couch but comes out to get petted when we're around.

Boo-Boo

Born: around Oct 1, 2005, Died: Aug 23, 2022
Boo-Boo was adopted from a local veternarian's office during a Christmas adopt-a-thon. They told us the mother cat and her 5 kittens were left on their doorstep one morning in a cat carrier around Halloween. Earlier that week the vet put a note on their signboard out front, "4 cute kittens and 1 not so cute kitten available for adoption." We came in to see which was the not quite so cute kitten, and Boo-Boo picked us out. The name Candycorn was given to her by the vet's office, but we call her Boo-Boo instead. Boo passed a few months before her 17th birthday

Penny

Born: around Oct 2011, Adopted: Mar 10, 2012, Died: May 6, 2022
Penny was rescued after a car hit her and broke her leg on Sat Mar 3, 2012. The vet said there wasn't enough of her knee left to pin the leg, so he had to amputate it. She came home with us on Mar 10, 2012. She seemed to be a beagle/hound mix. Penny passed after suffering from a bleeding tumor and loss of appetite, probably from cancer. She was 10 and a half years old.

Recent Family

Photos with two or more of our current pets.

Bunny

Born: Sep 1990, Died: Sep 2007
Shelley's first red dachshund. Bunny was the alpha dog in the house, up to her death at age 17.

Maddie

Born: around Nov 2001, Died: Aug 2008
Maddie was a stray who was adopted by Kellie after her original home didn't work out. She was beat up by the other cats in her house. Kellie took her in and let her live alone in her apartment up in PA. Maddie was happy to live with us here in NC. She developed some sort of blood cancer and anemia at a young age and passed away far too early.

Gaby

Born: Dec 1995, Died: Oct 2008
Gaby was Shelley's parents' dog. We adopted her when they passed away. She and Tinker are great friends, and she's a very sweet dog. She does live up to her name though: she barks alot at nothing. Gaby became ill and died suddenly at nearly 13 years old.

Merlin

Hatched: Feb 1993, Died: Apr 2009
Female Senegal Parrot, native to Africa. Merlin picks her feathers, so she always looks like she's a bit ratty.

Savanna

Born: Mar 1993, Died: Aug 2011
Savanna was named after a character played by Jennifer Tilly on the short-lived Fox TV show "Key West". She lived past 18 years until her quality of life started failing.

Blackberry

Age: unknown
Blackberry is a local stray cat who adopted us in the spring of 2004. He's a very friendly cat. He appears to be fixed and has definately been declawed in the front. He stopped coming by when one of our neighbors moved away so we think they must have owned him.

Nikita

Born: Aug 1998, Died: Apr 2013
More often called Nikki. My first wife and I got Nikki as a second dog for our German Shepherd. My first wife left, and the big dog got a new home, but I kept Nikki. She's a mutt that the pound called "Shepherd Mix". Nikki lived to nearly 15 years old with us.

Rhiannon

Born: Apr 2000, Died: July 2013
Rhiannon is a Welsh name meaning "Great Queen". She is a princess or goddess or witch of Welsh mythology, depending upon how you read it. You may have heard the Fleetwood Mac song about her by the same name. She developed heart failure and passed at age 13.

Sniffles

Born: Jun 2002, Died: Fall 2014
Sniffles was brought to us by our neighbor's daughter, who had found him and his sister in a stray litter. We took him in because he had an obvious head cold and needed vet attention. Sniffles preferred to live as an outdoor cat so he joined the neighborhood strays. We last saw him in the fall of 2014.

Tinkertoy

Born: Jun 7, 1999, Died: May 2015
Tinkertoy (more often called Tinker) is a true miniature red dachshund. She is the sweetest dog I have ever met. She still acts like a puppy at five years old. She gets along with all the other animals, and even cuddled up with Sniffles now and then. Tinker had a slipped disc in her back when she was older. She was able to walk again, but never able to climb stairs. She passed just before her 16th birthday.

Chili Pepper

Hatched: Aug 4, 1996, Died: Feb 24, 2017
Female Blue-Headed Pionus Parrot, native to South America.

Tinker at the Dog Olympics - Oct 1, 2005

Shelley and I took Tinker to the NCSU Vet School's annual Dog Olympics. She didn't get to enter the limbo contest this year, but she was one of the cutest dogs there.

Cricket

Born: 1987, Died: 2002
Cricket was a dachshund mix, owned by Shelley's sister, Rae Lynn.
